Game Story

Game 2 of the double dip would send many challenges towards the Hornets, but, in the end, they were able to walk off the Dragons for a two-fer sweep, 11-10.  Like Grant Lorenzen in the first game, Blake Eversole did it on the mound and at the plate coming in to close out the game, take the win, and deliver the game winning hit in the bottom of the seventh.

Grant Lorenzen notched two more hits and two RBI making his hit count six for the day. Kyle Gaines added his fifth and sixth RBI’s and Daniel Cass scored two runs as the courtesy runner.

It was a topsy-turvy game with both teams plating four runs in the first inning, then going down 1, 2, 3 in the second. Konnor Thompson started and was up and down. But when he was hitting his spots, he was unhittable. He allowed 10 runs, seven earned runs and gave up two walks but struck out eight. He allowed a homer to Dalton Erickson.

Dragon pitchers were also hot and cold but held the Hornets quiet through the middle innings. They’d wake back up in the fifth, scoring one run thanks to a Kyle Gaines RBI double. They’d take the lead in the sixth after scoring three runs which featured a two RBI double by Grant Lorenzen.

But the Hornets couldn’t slam the door as the Dragons scored three in the top of the seventh thanks to three walks and two hits.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets trailed 10-8. But the walk helped NKC as Brayden Sell and Bryan Gallen both walked to lead off the inning. Devin Petersen pinch hit and drilled an RBI single scoring pinch-runner Cass. Tim Moment would single in Gallen to tie the game. The Dragons wanted no piece of Lorenzen who was 6-8 on the day, so they intentionally walked him and up came Blake Eversole. With the bases loaded and the infield pulled in, Eversole took a 1-1 pitch to left-center scoring Sexton and walking off the doubleheader sweep.

The sweep marks the first doubleheader sweep by the Hornets since May, 2013 when the Hornets swept Belton on Senior Night. The Hornets improve to 2-4 on the year and the Dragons fall to 2-4.

The schedule offers no favors as the Hornets look to extend their winning streak. They take on William Chrisman (1-3) at home on Monday, Ruskin (0-3) on Wednesday, then travel to Grandview (4-2) on Friday before taking on Staley (6-1) in a doubleheader Saturday.
