In basically every way other than the scoreboard, this was one helluva game. Once again, for the second game in a row, the Hornets proved that they are certainly no team to overlook if they get an early deficit. And boy, did they charge back, thanks to a 10-run fifth inning featuring homers by both Bryan Gallen and Anian Nicolas-Zamora. But a few too many late runs and a couple of costly errors didn’t allow Northtown to hold on after taking a brief lead in the fifth. But man, that was a fun game to watch, and could easily mark a watershed moment for the team.

Game Notes:
Hornets gave up two runs in the first, but tied it in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-RBI single by Konnor Thompson. Thompson would go 2-3 on the day.
Starter Grant Lorenzen hit some more trouble in the third, but was able to pitch a clean fourth. His line was 6 R, 5 K’s, and 2 Walks.
Let’s talk about the fifth inning, shall we? The Hornets put up a dime on the Warriors thanks to a ferocious “keep the line moving” barrage of hits. Every Hornet in the lineup would score (except Devin Petersen, sorry Devin.)
The Hornets sent 15 men to the plate.
Kyle Gaines and Bryan Gallen both got two hits in the same inning.
Bryan Gallen hit a no-doubter to left for his homer of the year only to be followed two batters later by Anian Nicolas-Zamora who showed tremendous power hitting it to nearly the same spot in left.
Gallen would have five RBI in that inning as he had a 2-RBI single in his next at bat.
It truly showed what the Hornets were capable of at the plate.
Kyle Gaines bounced back strongly from his 0-fer night during the home opener to go 3-5 with a double and 2 RBI. Plus he pitched a strong seventh inning allowing only two runs on two hits, two K’s and a walk.
Tonight’s starting pitcher for St. Pius was Jack Stoddart. He is the son of Mike McCartney, who is the PA announcer for the Kansas City Royals.
