The calendar might’ve read Opening Day and First Day of Spring, but chilly temperatures met the Hornets in their opener against the Winnetonka Griffins on Tuesday as North Kansas City lost their opener 17-11 to the Winnetonka Griffins. The Hornets erased a first inning 1-0 deficit jumping ahead 2-1 thanks to the first two Hornets reaching via error, then an RBI Sac Fly by Kyle Gaines.

But the lead would be short lived as the Griffins varsity squad exploded for five runs in the second and four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. We told you earlier this week in the preview to keep an eye out for shortshop Daniel Newbury. He reached base five out of six tries and had four RBI with two hits and a walk. It wasn’t until Newbury took the mound that the Hornets were able to get some traction.

In danger of being run-ruled in the fourth and fifth, the Hornets battled back to score two in the fourth and five in the fifth thanks to a two RBI single by Reno Sexton in the fourth inning and a scorching liner down the first base line by pinch-hitter Casey Cayton in the fifth inning. Northtown would send all nine to the plate in the fifth inning.

But the double-digit deficit was too much to overcome in the late innings although NKC did make a strong run at it plating runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

All in all, the Hornets showed a ton of heart coming back in the late innings to make it a game after falling down early. It goes to the spirit the Hornets will need to show to improve over last year and in a tough conference. Head Coach Bubba Dotson looks to have Northtown with a never-say-die attitude which should catch a number of teams by surprise.
