Senior shortstop and pitcher, Kyle Gaines participated in National Signing Day on Wednesday and has selected State Fair Community College in Sedalia as the place he will continue his athletic career. The Roadrunners will be getting an aggressive and strong-willed pitcher and shortstop who is currently leading the Hornets in hits and posting a sub-one ERA for the Hornets.

Gaines is near the top in nearly all offensive categories for the Hornets.

The journey has been a long one for Gaines and one that is paying off. NKC Head Coach Bubba Dotson remembers Kyle when he first met him in 2014 while coaching Kyle’s older brother Kody. “Even then Kyle was a ball magnet, constantly wanting to be on the field, in the dugout, and playing catch with the outfielders between innings. When I got the head coaching job at Northtown, I had a few summer dates and tried to get as many kids there as possible. Kyle was going into his junior year. He was the first one there and the last to leave. Also, he had no problem doing what he could to call as many players as possible to get to the field the following week.”

Gaines also is one of the team leaders in ERA.

Kyle has turned into a leader for the Hornets this year. “He’s been a true brother to us. A leader,” said Hornets outfielder, Tim Moment.

“He’s a great person to have as a teammate,” senior catcher Devin Peterson said. “Kyle has physically contributed a lot to our team this year in the field, on the mound and at the plate.”

Gaines was a 2017 All-Conference first team recipient last season, and looks to be a strong contender for All-Conference again in 2018. Kyle is currently batting over .400 on the season and has been a centerpiece in Coach Bubba Dotson’s lineup.

The stakes will be even higher for Gaines next year as a Roadrunner. State Fair plays in the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAC), part of the National Junior College Association (NJCAA). The Roadrunners are 28-15 so far this season and looking for a deep run in the conference tournament.

Gaines will play a big part in the Roadrunner’s success next year. Head Coach Jud Kindle was impressed with Gaines’s attitude, “Kyle is an extremely athletic kid with a ton of upside.   After getting to know him he is the kind of character kid we want in our program.”

Congratulations to Kyle Gaines. A true example of #NorthtownWINS.
