Monday was a memorable and emotional night for the Hornet Varsity and JV teams as they faced off against their respective squads from Oak Park at T-Bones Stadium, home of the Kansas City T-Bones.

Officially, the JV team took game one 4-1 and the Varsity lost a pitching duel 1-0. But that barely scratches the surface of all of the great baseball and story lines that took place on Monday night.

Overall Highlights

  • We were honored that former Hornet ballplayer Parker Mullins threw out the first pitch in memory of his late brother, Alex Mullins. Alex was a former pitcher for the Hornets and Parker, a former catcher. Link to a great story on Fox 4 here.
  • A charity raffle was held for a number of items donated from sponsors like Tickets for Less and raised over $500 for the You Matter foundation in Alex’s honor.
  • Great support was also given by the Hornet Diamond Club in making sure all the ballplayers got food, all the raffle tickets and programs were printed, and everything ran like clockwork.
  • There was also support from the Northtown family as the NKC Stingers dance team, the NKC Cheer team, and the NKC Pep Band all turned out to show their support for the Purple & Gold.

JV Game

  • Brett Kamler and Noah Devero combined to hold the Northmen to only one run on the afternoon.
  • It was 2-1 heading into the seventh inning when the Hornets got two huge insurance runs thanks to Kamler and Sebastian Guzman RBIs.

Varsity Game

  • An incredible pitchers’ duel between Senior Kyle Gaines who allowed only one run on three hits going 6 1/3 versus Oak Park’s Robbie Jones who pitched a complete game, two-hitter shutout.
  • The best of both teams was on display in game two. It featured defense, pitching, just not a lot of offense.

We’ll have more coverage of both games later in the week. For now, enjoy some photos of the night.
