At a number of points in Thursday’s 8-3 Hornet victory over Fort Osage, it looked like the game had all the makings of a pitchers’ duel. Senior Grant Lorenzen on the Macken mound for the last time pitched brilliantly until the fifth inning when Fort Osage jumped ahead 3-1. That was when the late-charging Northtown offense batted around in the bottom of the frame scoring seven runs in a “keep the line moving” fashion. Senior Brayden Sell came on to finish the game and get the win that would seal the Hornets into second place in the conference, only one game behind Fort Osage who got their ninth win thanks to a forfeit by Ruskin.
The win did more than establish the Hornets as perennial contenders in the conference, it was also the highest conference win total in four years and highest season win total since 2015. It is also the highest winning percentage, only one game below .500 (45%) in a decade.
Hornet bats stayed hot in continuation of the Oak Park game and peppered three Indian pitchers with singles and steals.
North Kansas City will head into District tournament play on Saturday when they rematch with the Winnetonka Griffins – the team that gave Northtown their worst loss of the season early in April. But this is certainly not the same team to have lost that game. The Hornets are lava hot and ready to charge into Districts. Hope to see you there.
