Recap

The night started with the State Champion girls basketball team tossing out the first pitch, and it ended with a weak grounder to short. In between, the Hornets commanded the mound once again in their third straight win over the Oak Park Northmen 4-1. Getting just enough offense defense, but leveraging another dominant performance from junior Konnor Thompson, Northtown picks up their fourth victory of the season.

Let’s start, again, with Konnor Thompson’s night. He allowed only one hit through five and a third innings dropping his season ERA below 2 and adding 7 more strikeouts to his total. Hornets danced around an error in the first inning and Thompson wouldn’t allow his first hit until the fourth inning.

Oak Park sent their ace, fireballer Hudson Leach to the hill and he would be nearly perfect as well, allowing only one hit through three innings. However, he left the mound suddenly at the beginning of the fourth inning which left the door open for the Hornets to get to work. After Bryan Gallen reached on an error, Casey Cayton singled then Brayden Sell reached on a second error that scored Gallen. Konnor Thompson then drove in Cayton and that’s all the Hornets would need.

A big fifth inning with a scorching RBI liner down the third base side by Anian Nicolas and a Gallen sac fly would add two more insurance runs. He would have the lone multi-hit night, with Gallen, Sell, and Thompson all picking up RBI’s.

Then it was turned over to Thompson and freshman Brock McLaughlin, in what is turning into a fairly formidable duo. Thompson only walked one and K’d seven but began to leak oil in the sixth and hit his pitch count with a two out walk. Coach Dotson turned to the freshman to lock it down, and after a walk, struck out the next three batters then got the ground out to pick up the save.

The Hornets will face off against the Oakies in the final regular season game of the year at T-Bones Stadium on May 6. They improve their overall record to 4-5 and 3-2 in conference play. Their home game against Chrisman on Tuesday, will be their last before embarking on a nine game, twenty day road stretch – so come out and watch the Hornets as they start to hit their stride.
