At the half-way mark of the season, the Hornet hit title is still very much up for grabs. There are currently seven Hornets within a few hits of the number one spot and the hit title is there for the taking.
Junior Austin Creekmore currently stands atop the hit mountain with 16 knocks batting .471 on the year. Austin has hit safely in all but two games this season and is coming off of a three-hit game at Van Horn. Creekmore has already eclipsed his hit total of 12 and has been hitting to all fields so far this year.
Freshman Brock McLaughlin has hit leadoff for the majority of games showing the trust Coach Bubba Dotson has had in his effectiveness at the plate. He leads the team in RBI’s with 11 and has a homer.
Junior Casey Cayton and senior Brayden Sell both have 13 base knocks to take up third and fourth place on the list. Cayton had only three hits at the varsity level last season and has struck out only five times so far in 2019. Sell and Cayton are both batting .448, and Sell has the fewest strikeouts (3) among the hit leaders on the team.
Beyond the four leaders, there are several others lurking within range of the hit title. Senior Bryan Gallen (12), sophomore Anian Nicolas (11), and senior Grant Lorenzen (11) are both in double-digits for hits with Gallen also having a homer.
And don’t dismiss the speedy senior Tim Moment who has nine and could easily go on a tear at any time.
Last year’s hit champ, Gaines, ended up with 34 hits on the season, and all the leaders seem to be on pace to meet or exceed that number. With a four-game stretch this week, there is sure to be more jockeying for position at the top of the leader board.
